Barossa Views & Premium Chateau Tanunda
9am to 4pm Tanunda – Murray Street, start and finish
This is a fabulous day for the walker who loves food and wine. Walk through the spectacular Barossa Valley and the great Australian bushland, eat delicious local produce and experience Chateau Tanunda’s premium wine tasting experience.
Join Walk Local on this one day walk starting from the wine area of Pewsey Vale in the Barossa walking along gravel tracks past vineyards, farmlands and forests before entering the Kaiserstuhl Conservation Park.
There are two walking trails within this park which pass through a variety of landscapes including creeks, rocky outcrops, areas of low forest, scrub and open grassland. The park has panoramic views across the ranges to the Barossa Valley.
The Wallowa Hike offers a comprehensive look at the park’s main features, including a scenic lookout and rock formations such as Horse Head Rock. Weathering and erosion have produced this rock formation which, as the name suggests, resembles a horse’s head. Capped Rock, a horizontal rock slab perched on a vertical outcrop, is another interesting feature and provides an exciting photographic challenge.
The Stringybark Loop provides a brief look at the park’s diverse flora and fauna.
We leave the Conservation Park we wind our way down the hills with glorious views over the Barossa Valley.
Stopping at Bethany for our picnic lunch enjoying famous Barossa produce. The Barossa food story is a multi-faceted, continually evolving ode to seasonality and regionality. It tells of fruit ripened to perfection and vegetables bursting with real flavour. Of milk and cheese that taste of goodness and of poultry, pork and lamb that are fed well and nurtured with kindness. Of artisan food prepared with care and passion. Our picnic lunch showcases the very best of the Barossa.
Our afternoon walk begins in Bethany, founded in 1842, Bethany is the Barossa’s oldest settlement and a village sealed in time. Home to 300 souls, the focal point of this tight-knit community remains the Herberge Christi Lutheran Church under the steady hand of Pastor David Gogoll. As we walk you will learn about the history of this unique village following the Bethany Heritage Trail leading us to the Icon of the Barossa Valley.
Château Tanunda, was established in 1890 and is the site of some of the Valley’s first vines planted as well as its first winery. The Château is privately owned by the Geber family who continues a tradition of fine winemaking spanning three centuries.
Our 130 years of winemaking heritage makes it the only internationally-recognised winemaking Château in Australia, a champion of Barossa Old Vine Expressions and is regularly rated amongst the top wine producers in the country.
We visit Château Tanunda’s Cellar Door in the heart of the historic and atmospheric cellar amongst hundreds of barrels of maturing wine and join the Historical Tour. Explore the birthplace of the Barossa where the first vineyards were planted, and discover 130 years of winemaking traditions spanning three centuries before enjoying a relaxed and enjoyable the premium wine tasting experience.
